It may be hard to imagine but not all fats are bad for us. While some ‘Bad Fats’ can be harmful to our health, others when eaten in moderation can actually have a positive effect on our body.

Saturated Fat: This is one of the ’Bad Fats’ and is linked with high cholesterol levels and increased risk of heart disease. It occurs naturally in foods and is usually solid or waxy when at room temperature. Think of foods like fatty meats, butter and margarine.

Trans Fat: This is the other of the ‘Bad Fats’. They are created during the processing of foods and give food that desirable taste and texture. Trans fats are also associated with High Cholesterol levels and increased risk of heart disease. You will find them in foods like French fries, doughnuts and biscuits.

Polyunsaturated & Monounsaturated Fats: These are the healthy fats that can have a positive influence on your health. They can help to decease cholesterol levels and decrease risk of heart disease. Polyunsaturated fats also contain omega-3 & 6 fatty acids which aid in healthy cell development, brain function and growth of your body. You can find these ‘Good Fats’ in foods like fish, avocado, nuts & seeds. Although they are good fats they still need to be consumed in moderation.
