Keep Active & Cool This Summer

The weather is starting to get warmer and it is going to get harder to motivate yourself to exercise in the heat, so we have compiled a list of fun activities you can do to keep you exercising on hot days but also to cool you off.
Firstly the obvious choice is to go for a swim, the local pool or beach is a great place for some exercise, whether you swim, walk or run, the buoyancy of the water means that there is low impact on your joints and you can keep cool while burning lots of kilojoules.
Next give surfing a try, if you head towards a surf beach there are lots of surf board hire places and for 1-2 hours it’s relatively inexpensive.
But be sure to get advice from locals about the surf conditions and the best spots for beginners. Or for less than $100 at most places you can get a lesson and board hire to get started.
If that's not your style you could explore the scenery of the ocean with a guided snorkelling tour. Most places will take you on a guided tour will all equipment included for around $60.
So this summer try and mix it up and try something new you may even discover a new hobby!

Getting Through The Festive Season

Christmas can be a trying time of year when it comes to sticking to your goals of losing weight and eating healthy. There are so many work, family and social functions to attend and lets face it they are not usually catered for those who are health conscious. It is important to remember when at these functions that it is not a sin to indulge on the odd occasion, but moderation is the key. Sit your self away from the food to ensure you don't get tempted to over eat and reactively grab food with out thinking while in conversation and where possible make the choices that are best for you.
Aim to continue exercising through the festive period even if it is just getting everyone to go for a walk around the block together for 30 minutes after lunch, it is going to be better than nothing. A sensible goal to have throughout the period is to not get disappointed if you don't lose any weight and to just maintain your current weight making sure you get back into the swing of things in the new year.

Are Your Thongs Damaging Your Feet?

Summer is upon us and with that comes everybody's favourite piece of footwear the thong. While they do feel comfortable and provide an easy option to keep your feet cool in summer they may actually be doing considerable damage to your feet, ankles and knees. The main problem is that they offer very little support for your heel when it contacts the ground which can lead to overuse injuries and cause you to alter your walking patterns. A study into the effect of thongs on walking found that wearers had shorter stride length and changes in the angle between their shin and foot during their stride, this is thought to be due to them trying to keep the thong on their foot as they walk. Another finding of the study was that while walking in thongs people also scrunch up their toes to help keep their thongs on their feet. This can lead to shin pain such as shin splints. While this isn’t to say you should throw your thongs away now, just be aware that if you know that you will be doing a lot of walking through out the day thongs aren’t going to be the best option and you should go for footwear that offers a bit more support and practicality.
A better option for your foot is the full foot sandal with straps at the back of the foot so you don't need to work to keep it attached to your foot.
